"Super concrete" helps build widest bridge on Yellow River

With a total investment of 6.327 billion yuan, the Yellow River Bridge on Fenghuang Road in Jinan city, is currently under construction, including concrete paving, and is scheduled to be open to traffic by 2021.


The main bridge of Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge has a length of 1332 meters and a full width of 61.7 meters. It is a three-tower composite beam self-anchored suspension bridge with a span of 428 meters. Its bridge span and beam width are No.1 in the world, and it is truly a "super project".


Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge is all steel structure. Steel Bridges are light in weight, so they can have larger spans. The construction time is also shorter, resulting in less solid pollution, and later maintenance is more convenient.


The Fenghuang Road Yellow River Bridge will first be paved with 8cm thick "super concrete" on the steel deck, by asphalt paving to form a lightweight composite structure with ultra-high performance.


"Super concrete" is a figurative term, it is also called Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC for short). Its compressive and flexural strength is 5 to 10 times that of ordinary Concrete. Its toughness is very good, and its fracture resistance is 250 times that of ordinary Concrete, second only to steel. At the same time, its internal structure is very dense, better corrosion resistance, can be used as a bridge deck wear layer without any additional protection measures. Compared with the conventional steel bridge deck asphalt pavement, the UHPC layer is thinner and lighter in weight, which is more suitable for the long-span steel bridge.
